Words of Wisdom from Students

One thing I learned this semester is
  • that you can learn everything and be acceptable if you are interested in your subject and pay attention. (Diana)
  • to keep on improving my writing each time even if you have an A on your essay (anonymous).
  • that Abraham Lincoln wrote short speeches and there are a lot of good authors out there (Dennis).
  • writing an essay can be fun (Jacob).
  • that short stories have more meaning than what they show. (Lesley)
  • that I can get an A in English without feeling like I am a failure at everything I write (anonymous).
  • new words to put in my vocabulary (Violet).

One question I still have is
  • What are we reading next semester? (Kimberly)
  • What's the next story we read going to be about? (Lazaro)
  • What are we doing next semester? (Milagros, Michelle)
  • How I managed to get through this semester? (Katherine)
  • Will we be writing more autobiographical essays or was that the only one? (Maria)

What helped me learn best is
  • by reading stories and then watching the film about it. This really helped me to visualize and picture the events of the story. For example, for my essay on the Odyssey I was able to do a better job because I saw the Cyclops and the settings which helped me to write a more interesting essay that could entertain the reader (Jennifer).
  • working in groups and watching a movie of the story that we read in class (Jadine).
  • the fact that after reading we would watch a movie (Victoria).
  • going back and remembering the moments that are important in my life (Jaila).
  • my parents reminding me to do my best (Noe).

The Odyssey Vocabulary

OK, we are going to get this right yet. I created a course on Memrise called The Odyssey, but I failed to make it public. Here is the link if you want to study and take a makeup exam on Tuesday at nutrition.

Welcome to Room 424

Hi Scholars,

You are now a Sheik, which comes from the movie The Sheik starring Rudolf Valentino, the biggest Hollywood star of the early 1900s. In order to achieve your own fame, we will be focusing on the academic skills you will need to be successful in Advanced Placement classes when you get to them, as well as to be college and career ready when you leave Hollywood High School.

The first week we will start off with a getting-to-know-you activity as many of you will have come from different schools. We will also explore the growth vs. fixed mindset and learn how our attitudes can affect our outcomes. We will then proceed with the Greek epic The Odyssey, followed by a unit on short stories and finishing with a novel (to be determined depending on what you have read in eighth grade).

I look forward to getting to know all of you and to having a fun, productive year.
